iZotope Releases “Vinyl” – The FREE LoFi Effect Plugin
The concept of low-fidelity and purposeful audio degradation has become particularly popular in recent years, especially with the explosion of lofi hip hop, bedroom pop and other similar genres.
Many producers seek to emulate the dusty, vintage audio imperfections and artefacts that would have occurred naturally in old recordings. These emulations often produce nostalgic overtones, and can really enhance the character of a track.
iZotope has now re-released their lofi effect plugin “Vinyl”, which simulates the dust, scratches, warp, and mechanical noise reminiscent of yesteryear… for free! So if you’re looking to add some crackly, vinyl goodness to your sounds, this might be for you.
The original version of Vinyl was released well over a decade ago, but had a completely outdated GUI and DESPERATELY needed a redesign. This new interface has a sleek, clear and intuitive layout, and makes it incredibly easy to add various audio imperfections to your sounds.
What does it do?
One of the coolest features of Vinyl is the option to choose the audio processing style by decade (1930’s, 1950’s, etc…). Each option applies a slightly different vintage tone, adding audio degradation associated with that time period.
On the right hand side of the plugin, you have the main components; Dust, Scratch and Warp. These controls increase the volume of the individual elements. There’s also an RPM control which will determine the frequency of how often these audio artefacts occur. Vinyl also has controls for adding electrical noise and mechanical noise, as well as several other creative options to play around with.
A vinyl emulation plugin wouldn’t be complete without a spindown option, for recreating the iconic sound of a turntable vinyl slowing to a stop. Any DAW makes creating this effect quite easy anyway, but it’s cool to have this option with just a click of a button.
iZotope have also added a “Lofi” option to this re-release, which is essentially a bit-crusher control. Technically this has nothing to do with vinyl processing, but it’s a great addition regardless.
Vinyl is a versatile, highly usable lofi effect plugin for adding some retro character to your tracks.
This plugin is only available in 64-bit, but can be used in any DAW and has Windows and Mac versions.
