Techivation Releases T-De-Esser – A FREE De-Esser Plugin!

De-essing vocals is a crucial part of vocal processing.

There’s nothing worse than vocals with harsh sibilance or other resonant frequencies. This high-end harshness can completely ruin an otherwise great vocal mix.

De-esser plugins are often fairly expensive, for example FabFilters Pro-DS (currently $190).

However, Techivation have recently released “T-De-Esser”, a FREE de-esser plugin for both Windows and Mac OS.

T-De-Esser has a simple, highly intuitive design. Turning the central processing knob starts the plug-in’s operation, allowing you to set the de-esser’s intensity according to your taste. There are 4 frequency ranges available, depending on where the harshness and sibilance are coming from.

So what exactly is T-De-Esser capable of?

• Remove harshness from sound sources that were closely mic’d

• Manage sibilance in vocals and dialog in a transparent manner

• Treat irregular tonal balance caused by poor recording quality

• Reduce the glare from unnecessarily bright guitar and piano recordings

• Tame piercing synth sounds

• Control the high-frequencies in overheads’ transients, such as snare, hi-hats, or clash

• Give more dynamic range to your tracks while mastering, due to the reduction of unnecessary high frequencies

After testing this plugin on a few dry vocal samples, it’s obvious that a lot of care and detail went into the plugins’ audio processing. T-De-Esser makes it incredibly straightforward to remove any sibilance and harshness, while still retaining the natural character and tone of the original sound.
